Honoring Louisiana’s Nonprofits Involved in the Gulf Coast Recovery   

In the years since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita tore through the Gulf Coast, countless nonprofit groups and community organizations have pulled together to help the citizens of Louisiana rebuild their lives and communities. It is time that these organizations were recognized and given credit for their remarkable work. Each month, beginning in February and culminating at the Democratic and Republican Conventions this August and September, Friends of New Orleans (FONO) will recognize a “Hero of the Storm”; an organization that has played a major role in rebuilding the Gulf Coast.   

FONO, with the support of the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations (LANO) and Unified Nonprofits of Greater New Orleans, has established this campaign to honor the “unsung heroes” in the nonprofit community. Nonprofit organizations from all over Louisiana are eligible for this new award, but their work must be focused on the rebuilding and recovery since the hurricanes.   

Goals of the Campaign

• Honor Louisiana’s nonprofits that have helped the Gulf Coast recover and raise awareness about their mission and work;
• Drive home the message that nonprofits in Louisiana are investing in the Gulf Coast, and their efforts should be supported to ensure long-term success; and
• Increase local and national press and media attention surrounding the hard work and success of the nonprofit community.

 Eligibility

Nominees must meet the following criteria:

ü      Must be a registered 501(c)(3) organization

ü      Organization must show how they have led efforts to bring positive changein their community

ü      Program must have contributed to the recovery of the Gulf Coast region post-Katrina and Rita
